Bears WR Rome Odunze reacts to Ben Johnson hire: ‘A tremendous coach’

With just two weeks until the NFL offseason is in full swing, all eyes are on what the Chicago Bears will do with their new crew of coaches in town with Ben Johnson at the helm.

Only a week into his time in Chicago, Johnson is already made some big impressions on his players – starting at his press conference.

“I think Ben is a tremendous coach and playcaller. Certified,” Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze said on Deebo Samuel’s Cleats & Convos podcast. “I got to meet him at the presser and see his responses to some reporters’ questions and how he commanded the room. He seems very motivated and driven. I’m excited.

“I got to see the [Detroit] Lions…we watched a lot of their clips because they were balling all year. Their offensive scheme was tearing it up with all the weapons and stuff they got there along with Ben leading those guys. We got a bunch of new additions, good coaches flowing in so I’m excited for sure.”

Odunze’s excitement around the future of the Bears organization even dates back to an offseason workout he had with quarterback Caleb Williams before they were both drafted.

“He was working hard and trying to get that chemistry with me, Keenan [Allen] and DJ [Moore] before I even got drafted there,” Odunze said. “He has a hunger, a drive that carried over into the season. It was his rookie year, a lot of different learning and different things for all of us. He’s competitive, and he’s someone that puts everything into it so I’m excited for the future when we got someone like that at the helm.

“I was in the Pac-12, and I saw the way he led his team and the respect they had for him. I saw him from across the sidelines so I had plenty of respect for his game. When it comes to football and how he treats others and his teammates is A1.”

With all this excitement around the organization for the first time in several years, some Bears fans still have reservations around whether or not there will be success with Johnson at the helm. Odunze had a message for the fans:

“Hang in there with us,” he said. “We got enough talent. We just need to put the pieces together, put everybody where they need to be and have the right direction to follow, minds to put us in the position to make plays. I think we got a good audition here for something special, and hopefully years to come of Bears success. Appreciate all the Bears fans hanging in there with us. Things are going to get better.”
