Caleb Williams’ top Bears rookie season memory: ‘Beating the Packers’

Caleb Williams faced lots of hardship in his first NFL season, but his favorite takeaway from that rough campaign certainly will make Chicago Bears fans happy.

The Bears quarterback sat down with Esquire’s Brian O’Keefe in late February for a wide-ranging interview that covered, among other things, his journey to the NFL, his struggles and navigating his mental health during a 5-12 season.

The conversation, which Esquire released Tuesday, wasn’t all serious, though. When asked for his best NFL moment, Williams quickly answered: “Beating the Packers.”

The Bears hadn’t done much of that entering the 2024 season finale at Lambeau Field, having lost 11 consecutive games against their NFC North rivals, dating to Dec. 16, 2018. That all changed that January day in Green Bay.

Going into Lambeau for the first time can be daunting, but Williams remained calm and collected. The Bears trailed by one point on their final drive, but Williams escaped the Packers’ pressure and made two clutch passes to Rome Odunze and DJ Moore, putting his team in field-goal range. Cairo Santos kicked the ball through the uprights for a 24-22 win, much to Packers fans’ chagrin.

Bears-Packers is a storied rivalry, with Green Bay owning a 108-96-6 advantage. The Packers’ dominance, especially over the last few years, has became personal at times. For example, Aaron Rodgers infamously said, “I still own you guys,” after beating the Bears at Soldier Field in 2021, even taking it so far to write up a “Transfer of Ownership” to Green Bay’s new quarterback, Jordan Love, after he beat Chicago at home three years later.

The Bears’ win, though, was an indicator this rivalry might not go the same way it has for the last seven years. Williams certainly hopes it doesn’t.
