Cubs optimistic about Cody Bellinger after another injury scare

1 month agoTony Andracki

As Cody Bellinger hustled out an infield hit in the 1st inning Tuesday night, he hit the bag awkwardly and tumbled to the ground.

Cubs nation collectively held its breath.

Bellinger had just returned from the IL after missing 3 weeks with a finger fracture.

But he popped up and after a chat with Cubs trainers and manager Craig Counsell, he remained in the game.

He didn’t have to do much running as he was able to trot home when Isaac Paredes followed with a homer. Bellinger remained in the game as the Cubs’ DH, going 0-for-3.

But then Wednesday morning as the Cubs lineup came out for the series finale with the Twins, Bellinger’s name was nowhere to be found. Instead, Seiya Suzuki was DHing with Mike Tauchman in right field.

“He came in today and his hamstring was just a little sore,” Counsell said. “So we’ll see how he feels as the day goes on but just try to give him a day.”

Bellinger missed a month last season with a knee injury suffered attempting to make a catch in the outfield.

When he intitially fell, Counsell – and likely some others – thought maybe Bellinger had suffered another knee injury.

“I was very concerned seeing it live,” Counsell said. “I think we’re fine. I thought there was a knee thing seeing it at first. But he’s just got a little hamstring soreness, probably from hyperextending it there.”

In 8 games since returning from the IL, Bellinger is hitting .313 with an .834 OPS to go along with 2 homers, 6 RBI and 6 runs scored.

He is still not all the way back from the fractured finger and is unable to throw or play the field yet, though the Cubs are hopeful that can come soon.

The Cubs are off Thursday before a quick 2-game visit to the South Side Friday and Saturday.
