Cubs optimistic with Cody Bellinger’s progression from finger injury
Cody Bellinger’s recovery from a fractured finger is going well.
He took batting practice on Wrigley Field Tuesday afternoon before the Cubs took on the Milwaukee Brewers:
“Had a really good workout on the field today,” manager Craig Counsell said. “And we’ll progress tomorrow.”
Bellinger was placed on the IL on July 11 with a fractured middle finger on his left hand after he was hit by a pitch.
Given that it is his left hand, it is affecting both his throwing and hitting.
“The first test with the finger put throwing behind hitting,” Counsell said. “It feels like we’re a little behind in that category still. But I think the throwing can come pretty fast, too.”

Counsell did admit that the Cubs would be willing to bring Bellinger back before he is able to throw fully and serve as a designated hitter.
Bellinger has a .269 batting average with a .331 on-base percentage and .410 slugging percentage this season (.742 OPS). He has 9 homers and 37 RBI in 79 games while dealing with both the finger injury and a rib issue early in the spring.
Getting him back would be a big boost to a Cubs lineup that is fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive with the trade deadline a week away.
