Cubs rally for a big inning with Jed Hoyer on the call

2 years agoMatt Danielewicz

Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer joined the call with Jon ‘Boog’ Sciambi and Ryan Dempster at the bottom of the 6th inning Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.

As the inning progressed, the Cubs had the bases loaded with 2 outs and the score was tied 3-3 as Nick Madrigal stepped into the box.

On a 1-1 count, Madrigal delivered a 2-run single to right field, giving the Cubs a 5-3 lead with Hoyer in the booth.

“Does that happen? Please tell me that happened organically. It’s so great,” Hoyer joked.

After Madrigal’s basehit, Hoyer offered his insight on the type of player Madrigal can be when the Cubs traded for him last season.

“That was sort of vintage Madrigal right there,” Hoyer said. “Good at-bat, line drive to right field. It’s been nice to see. He had the injury and then the short spring, and talk about a guy who is hyper-competitive, you don’t get the big leagues with his physical stature without being the ultimate competitor.”

Hoyer compared Madrigal to a former player of his back when he was on the Boston Red Sox staff.

“I was with Dustin Pedroia in Boston and you have to have that kind of makeup and he wanted to play so badly, he wanted to be on the field. I think we’re finally seeing him playing healthy over this last month of so and he looks like he always does.”

Hoyer also talked about Nico Hoerner’s development, Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki’s first year in the majors and much more.
