Cubs’ skid hits season high in another tight loss in St. Louis

9 months agoTony Andracki

Entering what is arguably the biggest series of the season to date, the Cubs are not playing their best baseball.

Beginning Memorial Day Monday, the Cubs visit the Brewers in Milwaukee for 4 straight games in a matchup between the top two teams in the NL Central.

The Cubs’ season-high losing streak hit 4 games Sunday night in St. Louis with a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Cardinals.

The Cubs have also lost 4 straight series now, dating back to May 13.

Sunday’s defeat came as a result of a pair of 2-run shots from Paul Goldschmidt off Cubs starter Javier Assad.

Goldschmidt came into the day with a career .951 OPS against the Cubs and continued his onslaught on Chicago pitching, first in the bottom of the 3rd and then again in the 5th.

They were the biggest mistakes Assad made in what was otherwise a solid outing. In 5 innings, he struck out 8 batters and gave up 3 singles and 3 walks besides the Goldschmidt dingers.

Assad picked up his first loss of the season and his ERA now sits at 2.17.

Ian Happ provided the only offense for the Cubs with a 2-run shot in the top of the 7th inning and a solo homer in the 9th. It was Happ’s 3rd and 4th homers of the year as he continues to heat up at the plate (4 straight starts with an extra-base hit).

The Cubs rallied in the late innings. They left the bases loaded in the 8th and then in the 9th after Happ’s homer, Nick Madrigal and Mike Tauchman collected back-to-back singles before Seiya Suzuki flew out to deep right-center to end the game.

The Cubs are now 9-14 in May and are averaging 3.4 runs per game this month. They’ve lost 6 games by 1 run this month.

Entering the series in Milwaukee, the Cubs sit 3.5 games behind the Brewers in the division. Here are the pitching matchups for the 4 games:

Monday: LHP Justin Steele vs. LHP Robert Gasser
Tuesday: RHP Ben Brown vs. RHP Freddy Peralta
Wednesday: LHP Shota Imanaga vs. RHP Bryse Wilson
Thursday: RHP Jameson Taillon vs. RHP Colin Rea
