Cubs unveil 2022 minor league staff

2 years agoTony Andracki

The Cubs announced the organization’s 2022 minor league coaching staff and coordinator positions.

Headlining the coaching staffs is a slew of new managers at the helm of Cubs affiliates.

Marty Pevey (Triple-A Iowa) and Buddy Bailey (Low-A Myrtle Beach) remain in their managerial positions but Double-A Tennessee (Michael Ryan) and Class-A South Bend (Lance Rymel) boast new field generals.

Ryan managed South Bend in 2021, his first year in the Cubs organization after spending seven seasons in the Pirates system. Rymel managed the Cubs’ Rookie League team in Mesa in 2021. He has also managed short-season Eugene (2019) and the Cubs Dominican Summer League team from 2017-18. In the fall, Rymel shared his thoughts on his coaching development and offseason focus with Marquee Sports Network.

2022 will mark Pevey’s 10th year managing the I-Cubs and he holds the title as the longest-tenured manager in franchise history. Back in July, we caught up with Pevey on the Cubs Weekly Podcast.

Bailey enters his 34th season as minor league manager and his 2,202 regular season victories are the most among active minor league skippers.

In his first year with the organization, Edgar Pérez will manage the Rookie League Mesa Cubs while Carlos Ramírez begins his fourth season managing a Cubs Dominican Summer League squad. Former MLB veteran Enrique Wilson will take over as the other manager of the Dominican Summer League team.

Around Pevey, the Triple-A coaching staff remains largely the same as it was a year ago with Desi Wilson (hitting coach), Ron Villone (pitching coach) and Griffin Benedict (bench coach) all returning.

Double-A Tennessee has a new hitting coach in Rick Strickland, who previously worked as a hitting consultant at TrainRight Academy.
