Josh Phegley on fight for roster spot and Ross’ leadership
Cubs catcher Josh Phegley joined Taylor McGregor on Cubs Summer Camp to talk about his fight for a roster spot in a shortened 2020 season.
“I had one of the best springs I’ve had in my career,” Phegley said. “So, coming back, I felt like I put my best foot forward. They know what I bring to the table. Right now, it’s just about getting myself ready and getting used to the pitching staff. I’ve shown a lot with the bat recently and in spring training…I just try to bring my experience to the table, work with the pitchers the best I can, show them my knowledge and how I can relate to those guys and try to connect as fast as I can.”
Phegley had high praises for the Cubs’ bullpen along with new manager and former catcher David Ross. He says that Ross’ knowledge of the position is helping Phegley find his role within the Cubs.
“I’m looking at either the third catcher on the roster or not being on the roster,” Phegley said. “I think he’s had some backup jobs. Just to kind of understand the workload as well as the veteran presence I can be, handling the staff and being a presence behind the plate. I think he understands my role, and he’s portrayed that to me pretty well.”
