Chiefs fan, Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy shares his Super Bowl excitement

1 month agoAndy Martinez

MESA, Ariz. — Tommy Hottovy is pretty self-aware.

He knows he can sometimes get long-winded when talking pitching or about players and their intricacies.

“Jed and the front office always yell at me about trying to talk too much about players going into camp,” Hottovy told Elise Menaker in an exclusive, one-on-one interview at the Nike Performance Center on Saturday afternoon.

On the first day of camp, that might not be the case for the Cubs pitching coach.

After the first workout, the coaching staff and front office have meetings scheduled and will talk about players, but Hottovy promises not to gab too much. After all, his hometown football team, the Kansas City Chiefs, are looking to win their third straight Super Bowl later that night.

“They’re not gonna have any problem tomorrow,” Hottovy quipped. “It might be the fastest I run through players.

“But, no, I mean obviously I’m a big Chiefs fan, but I’m also working, so I know I have priorities and things that I need to do.”

But once that’s wrapped, it’s all about cheering his team on for a three-peat — even if it’s annoying to the rest of the football fanbases.

“It’s almost like people hate hearing it, but it’s almost like we’re getting used to it,” Hottovy said. “It was 30-plus years of some — not bad football, but like average football.

“So to be in the position we are, it’s fun. It’s fun to watch. I’m excited for the game.”
