Cubs top prospect Moises Ballesteros continues historic Triple-A tear
Moises Ballesteros is making a strong case to earn a call-up to The Show.
The Chicago Cubs’ No. 4 prospect (MLB No. 65) is putting on his own show for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, as he crushed two home runs and extended his hitting streak to 16 games Wednesday in a 10-8 loss to the Buffalo Bisons.
Ballesteros’ .402 batting average is the best in Triple-A, and his hitting streak is the longest for an Iowa Cub since 2019, when Jim Adduci hit in 19 consecutive games. Ballesteros also surpassed current Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong’s 15-game streak in 2023.
At just 21 years old, Ballesteros is in a class of his own, performing far above what players his age typically do in Triple-A.
“Moises has really done this throughout his career,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell told Marquee Sports Network’s Elise Menaker before Tuesday’s game in Pittsburgh. “He’s (always) been the youngest player on his team. He’s got a gift for hitting, and he made that obvious years ago.”
Ballesteros’ raw power certainly stood out to Cubs vice president of international scouting Louie Eljaua, who found the Venezuela native in 2018 playing in youth leagues in his home country.

In 2021, at age 17, Ballesteros signed a $1.2 million contract with the Cubs as an international free agent. He has earned midseason promotions in three of his five professional seasons thus far, including a 2023 jump from Single-A Myrtle Beach to High-A South Bend, then another call-up to Double-A Tennessee by the end of the season. His breakout subsequently earned him Cubs Minor League Player of the Year honors, and in June of last year, he joined Iowa.
While Ballesteros has MLB star potential, he’s blocked in the Cubs catcher pecking order by Miguel Amaya and Carson Kelly, who’ve also had incredible offensive starts this season. Ballesteros’ name has been floated in potential mid-season trade chatter, especially with the Cubs’ need for bullpen and starting rotation help.
Still, nothing is concrete for the young star’s future, and the Cubs certainly will enjoy his continued success and development in the minor leagues.
