NFL rumors: Ben Johnson, Bears hiring former Jaguars OC Press Taylor to offensive staff

The Bears offensive coaching staff gets deeper and deeper.

Head coach Ben Johnson will be the team’s primary offensive mastermind and the scheme’s primary designer. Offensive coordinator Declan Doyle will be his right-hand man and quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett will be the man always with boots on the ground in Caleb Williams’ meeting room. Antwaan Randle-El is assistant head coach who will be in charge of receivers as well.

Johnson has reportedly added another young talent to the group. The Bears have hired former Jacksonville offensive coordinator Press Taylor as their passing game coordinator, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday evening.

Taylor was Jags OC from 2022-24, and he called plays the past two seasons there. That adds an experience offensive play caller, something Doyle hasn’t done to this point. The Bears will work to install a passing game that plays to the strengths of quarterback Caleb Williams and the players around him.

He is also brother of Bengals head coach Zac Taylor.

Johnson still has several positions to fill on his coaching staff, most notably an offensive line coach on his side of the ball. The defensive staff needs to get fleshed out other than defensive backs coach Al Harris, though defensive coordinator Dennis Allen will certainly have some say in position coaches under his purview.
