NFL rumors: Bears build TE depth with Durham Smythe deal

2 weeks agoTony Andracki

The Bears are set to add another player with a Ben Johnson tie on to the roster this offseason.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday morning that the Bears are signing tight end Durham Smythe to a 1-year deal:

Smythe turns 30 in August and has spent his entire 7-year career with the Miami Dolphins. Johnson spent the 2012-18 seasons on the Dolphins coaching staff as an offensive assistant.

The Bears released veteran tight end Gerald Everett last month and need depth at the position behind starter Cole Kmet.

Smythe has not been utilized heavily as a receiver during his career, with only 132 catches on 175 targets in those 7 seasons. He has 1,228 career yards and 3 touchdowns – and just 1 score since 2020.

In 17 games last season with the Dolphins, he caught 9 passes for 53 yards while playing 32% of the team’s snaps.

Smythe is the latest in the Bears’ busy offseason to date, in which they turned over their coaching staff (with Johnson at the helm) and then turned over their offensive line by acquiring a pair of guards (Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson) in trades this week.

Smythe joins Jackson as players Johnson has coached previously. Jackson spent the first few years of his career with the Lions before signing with the Rams.

NFL free agency officially begins next week with the NFL Draft coming next month. According to OverTheCap.com, the Bears have $50 million in cap space (before the Smythe deal) and own the No. 10 pick in the Draft as well as a pair of early 2nd-rounders.

They still need to add a center to the offensive line as well as an upgrade on the defensive line and depth across other positions.
