NFL rumors: Dan Roushar expected to join Bears as offensive line coach

9 months agoScott Bair

The last major vacancy on Ben Johnson’s offensive staff is reportedly close to being filled. Dan Roushar is expected to become the Bears offensive line coach, per the Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs.

Roushar has primarily been an offensive line coach for decades, in both the NFL and college ranks. Most recently Tulane’s offensive line coach from 2023-24, he spent the previous 10 seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He coached a bunch of positions during that time and ran the offensive line from 2016-20. He was run-game coordinator from 2021-22.

The Northern Illinois product has therefore worked with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and offensive coordinator Declan Doyle in New Orleans. Roushar is well respected throughout the industry, has experience as run game coordinator and will be charged with improving upon Chicago’s lackluster offensive line play in 2024.

He’ll work with a group that could see plenty of new faces. Offensive tackles Braxton Jones and Darnell Wright are expected back, but the interior starters are all set for unrestricted free agency. The Bears understand they need a talent overhaul in the position group, a fact mentioned by Johnson and general manager Ryan Poles to this point.

The Bears have the resources required to make line improvements through the NFL draft and free agency. They have roughly $55 million in effective cap space and own three selections in the top 41.

Bears offensive position coaches to this point:

  • Head coach/offensive play caller: Ben Johnson
  • Offensive coordinator: Declan Doyle
  • Assistant head coach/Receivers: Antwaan Randle-El
  • Quarterbacks: J.T. Barrett
  • Offensive line: Dan Roushar
  • Running backs: Eric Bienemy
  • Tight ends: Jim Dray
