Off The Mound: Jed Hoyer prepared to lead and the lessons he learned from Theo Epstein

3 years agoStaff Report

Jed Hoyer has taken the reigns as the new Cubs president of baseball operations since Theo Epstein stepped down last month. Hoyer shared some of the lessons he learned from Epstein and why Chicago is so special to him Friday on Off The Mound with Ryan Dempster.

Hoyer and Epstein have worked together since their time with the Boston Red Sox. Now that Hoyer leading the baseball decisions with the Cubs, he understands the importance of work ethic and being able to communicate well to various individuals at each level.

“You can’t lead an organization and you can’t expect people to follow you unless you’re willing to be in the trenches all of the time and work your butt off and show that this is your main priority,” Hoyer said.

Even though Hoyer says he’ll miss Epstein, he is prepared for his next chapter with the Cubs.

“I felt like I was ready for this job 10 years ago in San Diego,” Hoyer said. “I came to Chicago with Theo because we always talked about breaking a second curse and joining forces in doing that together. I stayed here because I loved Chicago and I love the city, I love this organization. I’m excited for Theo’s next chapter and I’m excited to slide into that role and to keep things going and to really continue do great things here on the North Side.”
