Ross, Kipnis reflect on World Series memories in return to Cleveland

4 years agoTony Andracki

As they returned to Cleveland and the scene of what may be the greatest moment in Cubs franchise history, David Ross and Jason Kipnis reacted to the memories that came flooding back.

Kipnis was on that 2016 Indians team that suffered defeat in Game 7 and said Anthony Rizzo spent Tuesday taking him around Progressive Field to rub it in the veteran’s face.

“I’ve already had Rizzo walking me through — ‘I celebrated here, I celebrated here,'” Kipnis said. “I’m like, ‘thanks buddy, I get it.’ It’s years ago, but that game is never gonna go away. It’s part of who I am now and the memories I have can last a lifetime.”

That was the final baseball game Ross ever played, as he retired following the 2016 season.

He’s more focused on the 2020 Cubs and everything on their plate right now, but the first-year manager did allow himself some time to think back to that magical Nov. 2 evening, including interactions with Joe Maddon and Jason Heyward.

“It was cool to be back, obviously,” Ross said. “A lot of memories walking down the street and walking to the park today and walking in for sure. Definitely thought about celebration times. I walk into this office that I’m sitting in and remember Joe sitting me down and telling me my role for Game 7, how all that went down. The weight room down by the dugout and J-Hey’s speech. It was just real powerful there for a second.

“Walking in the dugout put a smile on my face. They took the Mario Kart out of here, I remember [Dexter Fowler] playing when I walked in [the clubhouse]. There were definitely some memories here, but just other than walking around for a minute, I haven’t been reminiscing too much.”
