Shota Imanaga, Ian Happ injury updates: Cubs GM provides latest news
CHICAGO — Shota Imanaga and Ian Happ are progressing well on the injured list, according to Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins.

Hawkins sat down with Marquee Sports Network’s Cole Wright, Ryan Dempster and Bruce Levine on “Cubs Pregame Live!” ahead of Sunday’s Crosstown Classic finale to answer some of the most pressing questions surrounding the organization.
One hot topic was Happ and Imanaga, both of whom are on rare IL stints. Imanaga hit the 15-day IL on May 5 with a hamstring strain, and the Cubs placed Happ on the 10-day IL with an oblique strain May 13, retroactive to May 10.
“Ian is coming along. He’s checking some of the boxes to get back on the field,” Hawkins said of Happ. “I would hope that’s close to minimum stay, if not a minimum stay.”
Speaking to reporters in the dugout, Cubs bench coach Ryan Flaherty added that the veteran left fielder will join the Cubs on the road in Miami and Cincinnati while he continues his recovery.
“He had a good day running the bases,” Flaherty said. “Tomorrow, he’s going to be on the field again, so he’s progressing well.”

As for Imanaga, Hawkins said the timeline is less clear-cut because of the nature of the left-hander’s position.
“It’s a little bit different when you have a pitcher,” Hawkins said. “He has to deal with getting his lower half ready. … But he also has to continue to keep his arm healthy. There’s a little bit of deconditioning that happens when you’re not able to throw on the mound. We have to build him back up.”
Imanaga, who owns a 2.82 ERA in eight starts this season, has missed his last two scheduled outings. The Cubs have moved a lot of the roster around to accommodate his and Happ’s absences, but it thus far has worked out. While Seiya Suzuki takes up Happ’s duties in left field, rookie Cade Horton is filling Imanaga’s spot in the rotation and has earned the win in his first two MLB appearances.
Hawkins raved about the young right-hander’s ability to step up.
“(Horton’s) agent called me when Shota went down and said, ‘Look, if you guys are thinking about having him pitch … He would die to go pitch on the road in New York. He’s ready for that,’ ” Hawkins recalled. “He’s got a big-game mentality, and so far, he’s been able to show that.”

Hawkins echoed what manager Craig Counsell has said about playing it safe with both players and not rushing them back.
(Happ) is putting in the work and making sure he comes back fully healthy,” Hawkins said. “Same thing with Shota … We’re gonna be safe with (him) for sure. But I expect that we’ll get him back here soon, and I can’t wait to get him back in that rotation.”
