1 year agoTony Andracki

SAN DIEGO — For the first time ever, the Cubs entered a Winter Meetings unsure where they would be drafting in the ensuing year.

Major League Baseball held the inaugural Draft Lottery Tuesday evening and the Cubs wound up with the No. 13 pick in the 2023 Draft.

Every team that did not make the playoffs was eligible for the lottery. Odds for the top selection were determined by reverse standings, with the three teams with the worst records (Nationals, A’s, Pirates) each holding a 16.5% chance of landing the No. 1 pick.

The Cubs entered with the 12th-best odds at the top pick (1.1%) but instead ended up falling to 13th.

The full draft order is as follows:

1. Pirates
2. Nationals
3. Tigers
4. Rangers
5. Twins
6. A’s
7. Reds
8. Royals
9. Rockies
10. Marlins
11. Angels
12. Diamondbacks
13. Cubs
14. Red Sox
15. White Sox
16. Giants
17. Orioles
18. Brewers

The Twins finished the season one spot behind the Cubs in reverse standings but wound up jumping all the way to the No. 5 spot.

The 2023 MLB Draft will be held in July during the All-Star Break.

The Cubs selected pitcher Cade Horton with the No. 7 overall pick this past summer.
