2025 spring training: Cubs make another round of roster moves

The Cubs made another round of roster moves on March 1st, reducing the roster to 54 players.

Gavin Hollowell, Caleb Kilian, Jack Neely and Cody Poteet were optioned to Triple-A Iowa, while Riley Martin was sent back to minor league camp.

Hollowell appeared in just one spring training game against the Texas Rangers, and posted 2 strikeouts in an inning of work.

Kilian, who has been with the Cubs organization since the Kris Bryant trade in 2021, appeared in 2 games in 2025 spring training, posting 5 strikeouts over 3.2 innings. In his 8 regular season appearances for the Cubs, Kilian has posted a 9.22 ERA in 21.1 IP.

Neely, another right-handed pitcher who made his major-league debut last season, posted a 4.50 ERA in his 2 appearances for the Cubs in 2025 spring training.

Poteet, acquired from the Yankees via the Cody Bellinger deal this past offseason, started the first game of spring training for the Cubs this year. He recorded just 1 strikeout over 2 appearances and 3.1 innings. Poteet had an impressive short stint with the Yankees last season, appearing in 5 games and posting a strong 2.22 ERA across 24.1 innings.

Martin pitched two scoreless innings for the Cubs in Cactus League play, recording 3 strikeouts. He has been in the Cubs organization since 2021 and made his last appearance for Triple-A Iowa.

In total, these roster moves reduce the active roster from 59 to 54 players.
