Former Cubs first-round pick Cam Smith named to Astros’ Opening Day roster

4 weeks agoAndy Martinez

The Chicago Cubs were OK sending their 2024 first-round pick to complete a blockbuster deal for Kyle Tucker.

Now that player, Cam Smith, will be playing in the big leagues immediately. The Astros are naming Smith to their Opening Day roster and will start in right field against the Mets on Thursday, manager Joe Espada told reporters in Houston. The Athletic’s Chandler Rome was the first to report the news, citing sources. Smith was part of a package that included right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski and third baseman Isaac Paredes that went to Houston in exchange for Tucker.

Smith was the 14th overall pick in the 2024 draft out of Florida State and was a fast riser. The 22-year-old appeared in 32 minor league games last season, slashing .313/.396/.609 (1.004 OPS) with seven home runs and 24 RBI across Single-A Myrtle Beach, High-A South Bend and Double-A Tennessee. He played in just five games at Double-A last season.

Originally drafted as an infielder, Smith was named a non-roster invitee by the Astros this spring and primarily played right field – a spot where Houston had an opening. He made the most of his opportunities in the Grapefruit League. In 43 plate appearances across 15 games, Smith slashed .342/.419/.711 (1.130 OPS) with 4 home runs and 11 RBI. The Astros have a pair of exhibition games in Houston before the season opener and he was part of the traveling squad for those games although his status was uncertain as he was on that flight.

Tuesday, he was officially told he’d be a major leaguer. He will become the quickest MLB debutant by a Cubs draft pick since Lance Dickson in 1990. Dickson was drafted in the first round that year and debuted in August that season, making three appearances. Kyle Schwarber is the last Cubs’ first-round pick to debut in the majors to debut before the end of the next year he was drafted.
