Cubs legend Anthony Rizzo honored by Chris Chelios at Wrigley
One Chicago sports legend saluted another at Wrigley Field on Sunday afternoon.
Hockey Hall of Famer and former Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Chris Chelios paid homage to former Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo during the 7th inning stretch.
“This one goes out to one of the greatest Cubs ever,” Chelios belted to the Wrigley Faithful. “The captain brought us a World Series championship. No better guy on the field, no better guy off the field. So to Anthony Rizzo and his family, if he is retiring, this one’s going to him.”
“Let’s hear it. Rizzo, Rizzo!” Chelios exclaimed as fans joined in.
Rizzo spent 10 seasons on the North Side of Chicago, helping bring the franchise their first World Series title in 108 years. The first baseman was a staple in the middle of the Cubs’ lineup, appearing in 3 All-Star Games and winning 4 Gold Glove awards.

In July of 2021, the Cubs traded Rizzo to the New York Yankees in exchange for Alexander Vizcaíno and Kevin Alcántara. At the time, Rizzo was entering the final year of his contract, and the Cubs’ postseason hopes were slim. Rizzo joined the Bronx Bombers in the midst of a pennant chase, where they eventually fell in the AL Wild Card Game to the Boston Red Sox.
Rizzo signed a 2-year, $32 million contract with the Yankees that offseason, launching 32 home runs en route to the Yankees going to the ALCS. He exercised his opt-out clause following 2022, but resigned 2-year, $40 million contract with an option for 2025.
His 2023 season started red hot, hitting .304 with 11 home runs in 53 games played. After a collision with Fernando Tatís Jr. at Yankee Stadium in late May, Rizzo’s season went downhill. He hit only .172 over the next 46 games before being placed on the IL with post-concussion syndrome.
He returned in 2024, providing 8 home runs in 92 games while helping the Yankees to the World Series. After the season, the Yankees declined his player option, and Rizzo became a free agent.
The former Cub currently remains a free agent.
Rizzo is surely a favorite amongst Cubs fans, but not only for being a part of the 2016 team. The Gold Glover is beloved for his many reasons, including his patented tarp catches, his hard-nosed style of play, and his leadership.
And who can forget him striking out Freddie Freeman!
The left-hander is 6th all-time in Cubs franchise history with 232 home runs and is a candidate to have a statue one day alongside Cubs legends in Gallagher Way.
