The Chicago Cubs finished their first full month of the regular season with an 18-13 record, leading the NL Central.

The season started earlier than normal for Craig Counsell’s group with a two-game series in Tokyo against the Los Angeles Dodgers that began a tough month against a bunch of playoff-caliber teams. The Cubs weathered the storm and packed a truckload of highlights into the first month of the season.

10. Justin Steele throws seven shutout innings at Wrigley Field

In what will end up being his final start of the 2025, the Cubs co-ace twirled seven shutout innings with eight punch-outs against the Texas Rangers at Wrigley Field. In 50 career starts at “The Friendly Confines,” Steele has a 3.20 ERA.

9. Kyle Tucker steals a hit from Mookie Betts

Kyle Tucker has provided everything the Cubs expected from him and more after a blockbuster trade in the offseason.

He’s tied for the team lead with seven home runs and is playing great defense in right field. On April 12, he took a base hit away from Dodgers star Mookie Betts with a diving catch:

8. Shota Imanaga shines at Wrigley Field opener

Shota Imanaga started the Wrigley Field home opener for the second consecutive season. In 2024, Imanaga tossed 6 shutout innings with 9 strikeouts in his MLB debut against the Colorado Rockies.

This season, he allowed only one run in 7.1 innings as the Cubs beat the San Diego Padres, 3-1. The Cubs improved to 14-3 in Imanaga’s starts at Wrigley Field.

7. Ian Happ makes diving catch in 1,000th career game

After receiving a standing ovation from the Wrigley Field faithful before his first at-bat in his 1,000th game, the three-time Gold Glover gave fans a treat of his own. Ian Happ robbed Padres designated hitter Gavin Sheets with a diving catch down the left field line.

Cubs relief pitcher Nate Pearson had the same reaction as everyone who was watching:

6. Pete Crow-Armstrong hits two home runs in Los Angeles

Pete Crow-Armstrong loves playing against the Dodgers.

He has hit four home runs in his last four games against the defending World Series Champions, including two at Dodger Stadium on April 13.

5. Miguel Amaya game-tying home run against Dodgers

What a game this was. The Cubs erased a three-run deficit in the eighth inning against the Dodgers.

After Tucker launched a 2-run home run in the eighth inning to make it a 10-9 game, Miguel Amaya hit a game-tying home run into the left-center field basket with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Amaya had Wrigley Field rocking.

4. Jordan Wicks catches Josh Naylor stealing home

This play caught almost everybody by surprise … almost.

Jordan Wicks noticed Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Josh Naylor break for home and trying to steal a run in extra innings. Wicks delivered a strike to catch Naylor. This was the second time in that game Naylor was nabbed at the plate.

The first time was from Nico Hoerner:

3. Kyle Tucker go-ahead home run against Diamondbacks

This game could have been a devastating loss for the Cubs.

Entering the top of the eighth inning the Cubs were up, 7-1. They ended the top of the eighth down, 11-7.

But the Cubs immediately responded.

Carson Kelly launched a 3-run home run — his second of the game — to bring the Cubs within one.

After Happ reached on a single, Tucker delivered his most memorable Wrigley Field moment to date with a go-ahead, two-run home run into the right field bleachers to put the Cubs up, 12-11.

Seiya Suzuki went back-to-back with Tucker and Ryan Pressly got the save in a 13-11 Cubs win.

2. Ian Happ walks off the Dodgers

The Cubs led this game 7-5 entering the seventh inning. Spotty defense and a couple free passes issued helped the Dodgers take a 10-7 lead.

After rallying to send the game to extra innings, Happ ripped the first pitch he saw in the 10th inning into right field, scoring Vidal Bruján.

Happ finished the day 4-for-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI.

1. Carson Kelly hits for the cycle

Carson Kelly hit nine home runs in 91 games last season. He’s hit seven in 17 games to start 2025.

His first home run with the Cubs came in a game he’ll never forget. Kelly became the first Cub to hit for the cycle since Mark Grace did so on May 9, 1993.

He’s also the only player in MLB history to hit for the cycle in the month of March.
