Cubs’ Ian Happ records milestone 500th RBI in game against Nationals

Ian Happ is having a season to remember in 2025.

The Cubs’ three-time Gold Glove-winning left fielder notched his 500th RBI with the team on Thursday, which came on a double in the second inning against the Washington Nationals.

The big moment kicked off a big night for Happ, who went 3-for-6 with four RBI in the Cubs’ 7-1 win. He added career RBI Nos. 501 and 502 in the sixth inning with a two-run home run — his fourth of the season and 154th of his career. He later punched a single to center to score Matt Shaw in the ninth.

Following his four-RBI evening, Happ spoke to the media explaining how he felt at the plate.

“It felt really good,” Happ said. “I’ve been getting closer and closer every day, and so to click a few and finally see a few balls find grass felt really good. The double felt good, but the homer is the swing I’ve been looking for for a while.”

When Happ returned to the lineup following his oblique injury on May 20th, the veteran outfielder’s timing at the plate had been off. After his three-hit night in the series finale in the nation’s capital, he started to feel comfortable despite the struggles in recent games.

“Every day, trying to get it right, trying to get that timing and that feel, and it’s tough,” Happ said in a postgame interview with Marquee Sports Network’s Taylor McGregor. “When you’re not on time, the mechanics break down, and you think it might be that or you think it might be the timing, so trying to get in a position where you’re comfortable to hit, and I got there tonight.”

The feat comes exactly two months after Happ celebrated his 1,000th game as a Cub on April 5 against the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Field.

Happ joins a star-studded list of Cubs to reach 500 RBI that is headlined by Ernie Banks, Sammy Sosa and Billy Williams. He is the 35th Cub to reach the mark all-time, and the first to do so since Anthony Rizzo on August 19, 2017.

The Cubs drafted Happ No. 9 overall out of the University of Cincinnati in the 2015 MLB Draft. He made his debut on May 13, 2017, and became the longest-tenured player on Chicago’s roster after Kyle Hendricks’ departure in 2024.

The Cubs get ready for an important weekend series with the Detroit Tigers starting Friday night. Ben Brown is slated to pitch for the Cubs as he goes up against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal.
