Matt Shaw plays Cubs hero, making big impact in major league return

3 weeks agoTony Andracki

CHICAGO — As Cubs players scrambled out of the dugout and rushed toward first base in celebration, they ran toward a different version of Matt Shaw.

The Cubs rookie has seemed like a brand-new player since rejoining the MLB team on last week’s road trip.

That change has made all the difference, as Shaw has been productive all over the field for the Cubs — offensively, defensively and on the basepaths.

That includes Tuesday night, when he collected his first career walk-off hit — a single that lifted the Cubs to a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies in 11 innings at Wrigley Field.

Shaw understandably was overcome with emotion after the highlight of his young career to date.

“This is amazing,” he told Marquee Sports Network’s Elise Menaker on the field after the celebration. “What an amazing place to hit a walk-off. Great at-bats in front of me, and gosh, just really blessed and really thankful.”

The 11th-inning single was Shaw’s second hit of the game, and he now has reached base safely multiple times in six of eight contests since returning to the majors.

He also stole two bases — his third and fourth of the season — to help add another element to this high-powered Cubs offense.

The recent surge has lifted Shaw’s MLB batting line to .236/.333/.337 on the season. He hit just .172/.294/.241 (.535 OPS) in 18 games before the Cubs demoted him back to Triple-A in mid-April.

“There’s so much that’s changed,” Shaw told Menaker. “I had a lot of perspective after getting sent down, understanding things I was going to do differently this time around. And it’s been working.”

The Cubs have seen the same thing.

President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer believes the big difference for Shaw is simply feeling more relaxed.

“He looks comfortable,” Hoyer said before Tuesday’s game. “Even on defense, I feel like he’s made some plays I don’t feel like he would have made last time — not because he couldn’t have made them. Whether it’s feeling like he belongs, or whatever happened in the minor leagues within player development, but he looks more comfortable, calm.

“The way he’s taking his at-bats has been better. I mean, great at-bats Monday and led to two runs. I think he looks more comfortable, and hopefully that continues.”

Shaw entered the season as the Cubs’ consensus No. 1 prospect with elite minor-league production, blending power and speed with a versatile glove that can play all over the infield.

After Shaw took a few weeks in the minors to reset and regain his confidence, it appears we’re seeing that potential manifest in the big leagues for the first time.
