Cubs top prospect Moisés Ballesteros reveals MLB career goals
CHICAGO — Moisés Ballesteros leaned forward slightly to hear a reporter’s question. As he listened, a smile crawled over his face before he answered, simply and emphatically:
“To stay here in The Show.”
The question was in reference to the young Cubs prospect’s goals for his first taste of the major leagues. He only has one: To never return to the minors.
As he sat at the back of the third base dugout Tuesday at Wrigley Field, Ballesteros reiterated several times that he understands this is a new field and a new city. He even insisted he wasn’t feeling any extra nerves as he approached his MLB debut, one day after being called up from Triple-A Iowa.
“It’s the same game, it’s the same goals for me,” he said. “It’s the same thing in every stadium — focus in the box and execution.”
The Cubs called up Ballesteros to fill a roster need as outfielder Ian Happ headed to the 10-day IL with an oblique injury. The 21-year-old immediately was inserted into the Cubs lineup against the Miami Marlins, batting seventh as the designated hitter.
All through the Cubs’ minor league system, Ballesteros has been young for his level. When he reached Iowa as a 20-year-old last season, he was nearly six-and-a-half years younger than the average Triple-A player.
But with one brief interaction Tuesday, he flashed a glimpse as to a possible reason why he has found success despite a marked lack of experience: Self-assured confidence.
Ballesteros’ job is to hit — and he fully intends to do that well enough that the Cubs feel like they can’t send him back down to the minors.
How he would fit into the Cubs’ lineup long-term is a question without an answer right now. But that’s also not his concern. He’s just trying to enjoy the moment.
That’s a bit easier with his family in town from Venezuela. In a twist of fate, Ballesteros’ mom, Andry, and dad, Harry, happened to arrive in the U.S. on Monday. They anticipated watching their son play in Triple-A, but they were able to pivot and join Ballesteros on his first trip to the majors.
“Really fun,” he said. “It’s my first time here, taking batting practice at Wrigley Field — it’s amazing. I’m really excited with my family here.”
