Why Matthew Boyd believes Pete Crow-Armstrong belongs in NL MVP talk
Pete Crow-Armstrong is having a breakout 2025 campaign.
Crow-Armstrong is the only player in MLB to have both 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases this season, and leads the National League with a 3.5 fWAR. He’s tied for or leads the Cubs in each of the following categories: runs, hits, home runs, total bases and stolen bases. Through two months, he’s undoubtedly in the NL MVP conversation, and his teammates are supporting that campaign.
Cubs pitcher Matthew Boyd joined Foul Territory on Tuesday to discuss his teammate’s chances at winning the prestigious award.
“Pete is special, man,” Boyd said during the interview. “What he can do in all facets of his game, whether it’s on the basepaths, how he plays defense, and how he can work an at-bat.”
“The power that he has, it’s really fun to watch. He’s got the tools to be in that (MVP) conversation.”
Crow-Armstrong isn’t just posting flashy numbers on the offensive side. He’s atop Baseball Savant’s leaderboards in both outs above average and fielding run value, while making highlight reel catches regularly.

“He plays the game at a high level. And I’m grateful he’s in centerfield behind me, man, because there’s balls that you watch get hit in the gap and like, you just see him close on it and you’re like, ‘Oh, that’s nice to have on our team,'” Boyd continued. “It’s fun to watch every single day. Man, it’s like watching a dude really come into his own.”
If Crow-Armstrong were to win NL MVP, he would join a list of Kris Bryant, Sammy Sosa, Andre Dawson, Ryne Sandberg, Ernie Banks and Hank Sauer of Cubs to win the award since 1950. He would also be the youngest player to win NL MVP since Bryce Harper (22) in 2015.
