Cubs react to scary fan fall at PNC Park during game vs. Pirates

3 weeks agoZoe Grossman

A fan was severely injured Wednesday night after a fall during the seventh inning of the Chicago Cubs’ 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

The unidentified man fell from above the 21-foot Clemente Wall in the right field bleachers just as Andrew McCutchen’s two-run double gave the Pirates the lead. The man was carried off the warning track on a stretcher and transported to Allegheny General Hospital, per a statement from the Pirates.

Pittsburgh police said the man is in critical condition, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Multiple Cubs players reacted to the incident postgame and offered their support to the man and his family.

“I was inside, so I didn’t see what happened, but I heard about it,” Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd told reporters. “That’s scary stuff.”

Players in both dugouts could be seen pointing to the warning track and calling for help when the incident occurred. Players appeared visibly shaken, including McCutchen, who held his face in his hands.

Game action was paused while medics entered the field. Nico Hoerner, Dansby Swanson, Ian Happ and Michael Busch were among those players shown taking a knee on the infield as the situation unfolded.

“I just saw the urgency on (Craig) Counsell’s face … Everyone realized what was going on,” Swanson told reporters. “Everyone was taking a knee, just praying and hoping everything is OK. I’ve never been a part of something like that.”

Counsell began his media availability by addressing the incident.

“First, I hope the gentleman is OK,” he said. “I’m thinking about his family and him right now.”

Pirates manager Derek Shelton expressed his appreciation for both teams’ staff who helped during the incident.

“I thank both our medical staff, the Cubs’ medical staff, EMS, everybody that got to the gentleman,” Shelton said. “I just ask everybody to keep him in your prayers.”
