MLB rumors: Top prospect Cade Horton expected to join Cubs in New York

2 weeks agoTony Andracki

As the Chicago Cubs sort through their rotation options for this weekend, one Chicago radio host is hearing the decision may be finalized.

ESPN 1000’s David Kaplan said Thursday morning on his show “Kap & J Hood” that he caught wind through sources Cade Horton will travel with the Cubs to New York for the weekend series with the Mets.

“I’m hearing — it’s not done — but I am hearing, and a couple friends of mine are hearing the same thing around the Chicago National League ball club, that young Cade Horton is getting a call to get to the jet! We’ll see,” Kaplan said. (Check out the full comments from Kaplan about 14 minutes into the show.)

Des Moines Register reporter Tommy Birch followed later in the day on Thursday, confirming the news that Horton is expected to join the Cubs in New York:

The Cubs have acknowledged Horton is one of the options to take Shota Imanaga’s rotation spot on Saturday, but they also spoke about how they were prioritizing his development in Triple-A — especially after missing more than four months last season due to injury.

“We’re just trying to make sure it’s the right time,” Hoyer said on Monday. “I think that it’s easier to work on things in the minors, and he didn’t pitch a lot last year.”

Horton only threw 34.1 innings last season and had a 7.50 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Iowa.

He has pitched well this season with a sparkling 1.24 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 33 strikeouts in 29 innings with Iowa.

New York presents a difficult market — and matchup — for Horton. It’s the biggest media market in the league and the Mets boast one of the best lineups in the league with Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Pete Alonso.

The Cubs could have opted to go with a bullpen day or roll out veteran Chris Flexen as the starter on Saturday and scheduled Horton to make his debut against the White Sox — one of the league’s worst teams — next weekend at Wrigley Field.

But they understand making an MLB debut at Wrigley comes with its own drawback.

“The big leagues is the big leagues for me, you know?” Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy said Wednesday. “No matter who you’re facing, your first outing, you’re going to be amped up. You’re going to be excited. In an ideal situation, would you like a softer landing? Absolutely. But I could also say, starting in Wrigley Field is going to be a big experience for any young pitcher that comes up.

“So I don’t really see a huge difference either way. I do think sometimes when guys make their debuts on the road, it’s a little less pressure, because it’s not the full media scrum that you would get, you know, when you’re in Chicago.”

The Cubs have yet to confirm the news but it certainly appears as if Saturday’s game got a whole lot more interesting.
