Cubs recall Ethan Roberts to take Porter Hodge’s roster spot
The Chicago Cubs made some expected moves prior to Tuesday night’s game against the Miami Marlins.
President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said earlier in the day that left fielder Ian Happ would be activated and Moisés Ballesteros would head back to Triple-A Iowa.
And although manager Craig Counsell said Monday that relief pitcher Porter Hodge was headed to the injured list with a left oblique strain, who would take his Cubs roster spot wasn’t known.
The answer came Tuesday, and it was Ethan Roberts, who had a 5.40 ERA over nine appearances and 8.1 innings pitched for the Cubs earlier this season.
Roberts has gone back and forth between the majors and minors this season. The Cubs first brought him up on April 9 and sent him to Triple-A Iowa on April 27. The right-hander will join a beleaguered bullpen that has performed well at times and cost the Cubs games at others.
The bullpen was the issue in Monday’s 8-7 loss to Miami, with Daniel Palencia blowing a save despite the Marlins being down to their last strike. The Cubs have had issues in the ninth inning overall, but Roberts likely won’t be considered for the closer. Roberts gives the Cubs a fresh arm, which should help the relief corps, and his 1.69 ERA in nine Triple-A appearances bodes well for a rebound in the majors.
Hodge spoke to reporters prior to Tuesday’s game and said he’s confident the oblique issue shouldn’t last too long. He first felt pain in the muscle Friday, and it worsened the following game, but he has felt better since.
“It’s definitely trending in the right direction, day by day,” Hodge said. “I think it’s getting better. We’ll have to see how it goes the next few days and into the off day (Thursday). I’m going to throw a little bit (Wednesday). Hopefully it’s a short stint (on the IL).”
