Cubs sign veteran reliever Génesis Cabrera, DFA Brooks Kriske
The Chicago Cubs officially added a veteran arm to their bullpen mix Thursday, signing left-hander Génesis Cabrera to a major league contract and designating right-hander Brooks Kriske for assignment.
MLB insider Jon Heyman first reported the move Tuesday night, and Marquee Sports Network’s Andy Martinez confirmed via sources that it would be a major-league contract. Cabrera also updated his verified Instagram account to include the Cubs in his bio.
Cubs fans might best remember Cabrera, 28, from his four-plus seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. He went 13-11 with a 4.14 ERA in 174 games from 2019 to 2023 with 198 strikeouts in 189.1 innings before being dealt to the Toronto Blue Jays near the MLB trade deadline.
Cabrera stayed with the Blue Jays through the 2024 season and signed a minor-league contract with the Mets in November, but they designated him for assignment Saturday.
Cabrera cleared waivers, but he elected free agency, leaving him free to sign with the Cubs. He gives the team experienced depth, with 278 major league appearances over his seven seasons, though he has shown control issues, with 139 walks in 283.1 innings for a career 1.35 WHIP.
The Cubs already have two lefty relievers on the major-league roster with Drew Pomeranz and Caleb Thielbar. Tom Cosgrove, Brandon Hughes and Luke Little are the experienced lefties on Triple-A Iowa’s roster.
Kriske’s Cubs tenure lasted just five days, as he was called up from Triple-A Iowa on May 24. He pitched two scoreless innings that day in the Cubs’ 6-4 road loss to the Cincinnati Reds in his lone Chicago outing.
