Cubs put up wild second inning vs. White Sox in Crosstown Series opener
CHICAGO — Crosstown Series games are bound to wreak havoc in Chicago, both on and off the field.
The first installment of this year’s Cubs-White Sox series was no different, as fans were treated to a wild second inning Friday at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs’ defensive half of the inning ended strangely as the White Sox’s Brooks Baldwin received an interference call for sliding into Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson while the latter attempted to turn an inning-ending double play at second base. Both Baldwin and Chase Meidroth, who was running to first, were called out, handing the Cubs an unorthodox ticket out of a jam.
Then the Cubs’ offense responded to put up a six-spot in the bottom of the second against breakout White Sox pitcher Shane Smith.
Michael Busch led off with a single, and Carson Kelly followed by ripping a double to left-center. The ball disappeared into the ivy to keep Busch and Kelly in scoring position with no outs.
A strikeout by Swanson brought up a big spot for rookie Moisés Ballesteros, still in search of his first big-league hit.
The 21-year-old DH slapped the ball to first baseman Andrew Vaughn as Busch charged home. Vaughn could not nab Busch in time, though, handing Ballesteros his first RBI on a fielder’s choice and cutting the deficit in half.
The Cubs then tied the score at 2 on another fielder’s choice, as Nico Hoerner grounded to short and White Sox catcher Matt Thaiss couldn’t hold onto Meidroth’s throw to the plate.
After a Jon Berti strikeout, Pete Crow-Armstrong crushed his 12th home run of the season — a three-run blast that just stayed fair in right field — for a 5-2 Cubs lead.
The two-out rally continued as Kyle Tucker’s triple and Seiya Suzuki’s double put a sixth run on the board for the Cubs.
Fittingly, the inning ended with the same man who started it, as Busch struck out swinging.
