Cody Bellinger exits Cubs game after being hit in hand with pitch

2 years agoAndy Martinez

The vibes were rolling in Baltimore.

An injury scare but a damper on the night for the Cubs.

Cubs slugger Cody Bellinger was hit in the hand by a pitch from Cionel Pérez in the top of the 7th. He remained on first for the rest of the half inning, but when the Cubs took the field in the bottom of the frame, Bellinger had been replaced in right field by Miles Mastrobuoni.

“It’s his left middle finger,” manager Craig Counsell said after the game. “Didn’t feel like he could throw a baseball. We’re gonna have to do some tests and figure out what’s going on.”

Bellinger was 2-for-3 before exiting the game. He’s been one of the Cubs’ most crucial offensive pieces — he has a .741 OPS with 9 home runs and a 106 wRC+ this season.

He’s been vital for manager Craig Counsell — Counsell has been able to deploy him in center field, right field and first base, using his versatility to try and maximize the Cubs’ offense.

Bellinger missed two weeks earlier this season with a right rib fracture he suffered when he ran into the wall at Wrigley Field.

If he were to miss any time, Counsell and the Cubs would likely deploy a full-time outfield of Ian Happ in left, Pete Crow-Armstrong in center and Seiya Suzuki in right. The Cubs have Alexander Canario as outfield depth on the 40-man in Triple-A, but the 24-year-old hasn’t played in the field since June 15 — he’s manned the DH role in 17 straight games for the I-Cubs.

Mike Tauchman (left groin) is resuming baseball activities, but won’t be back before the All-Star break.
