Cubs accomplish something they haven’t done since 2016

The Chicago Cubs offense came alive Saturday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers, scoring 16 runs on 21 hits. It was the first time since April 21, 2016 the Cubs won a game by the score of 16-0.

Okay, winning by a score of exactly 16-0 is somewhat random, but you may remember what happened in that game from 2016.

Jake Arrieta no-hit the Cincinnati Reds โ€“ his 2nd no-hitter in a span of 9 starts. His first no-hitter took place at Dodger Stadium on August 30, 2015.

In Saturday night’s drubbing of the 2024 World Series Champions, first baseman Michael Busch went 4-for-6 with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles, a home run a 3 runs batted in. He’s only the second player this season to accomplish all of those in the same game.

The other player? Kyle Tucker.

There have been only five players to accomplish this feat with the Cubs since 1920. Before this season, the last Cubs player with a stat line like that was Kris Bryant on June 27, 2016.

Saturday night marked the second time the Cubs won a game this season by at least 15 runs. There have only been three games decided by 15+ runs in MLB this season.

From 2016-2024, the Cubs had only won three games by 15+ runs, and it’s the first time the Cubs have two 15+ run wins in a season since 1970.

It’s not often the Dodgers lose by such a lopsided score. In fact, Saturday marked their worst home shutout loss in franchise history. The Cubs’ run differential of +41 is by far the best in baseball, with the San Diego Padres having the next best run differential at +24 entering play on Sunday.

Sitting at 10-7, the Cubs have posted their best run differential through 17 games since 2016 when they started 13-4. The Cubs will face another tough challenge on Sunday as All-Star Tyler Glasnow gets the ball for Los Angeles. Despite allowing 5 earned runs in his last outing against the Philadelphia Phillies, Glasnow should present a tough challenge as the Cubs go for the series win.
