Cubs activate cruise control in win over Rockies

1 month agoTony Andracki

After a tough series to open the season against the defending champs in Texas, the Cubs wasted no time in getting back on track.

It helps that they drew the rebuilding Rockies during frigid and very un-baseball-like conditions at Wrigley Field.

Behind a relentless offense and a dominant pitching performance from Javier Assad, the Cubs cruised to a 12-2 win over the Rockies Tuesday night in front of 26,555 shivering fans.

The Cubs have now outscored the Rockies 17-2 in the first 2 games of the series.

The temperature at first pitch of both games combined (85 degrees) barely got to a standard summer day at “The Friendly Confines.” Tuesday’s first pitch temperature of 42 degrees belied the overall chill of the evening as by the time the game finished, the “feels like” temperature dipped into the 20s.

In conjunction with the snow flurries, the Cubs sent little white pellets of their own into the bleachers all night.

The lineup crushed 4 homers: Seiya Suzuki in the 1st inning, Christopher Morel in the 3rd, Garrett Cooper in the 6th and Cody Bellinger hit one off the right field scoreboard in the 8th while the fans were chanting “CODY! CODY!”:

“That was cool,” Bellinger said. “Sometimes you hear [the chants] and sometimes you don’t but I definitely heard that one. So that was really cool.”

Bellinger’s teammates were in awe of the moment, too.

“That’s pretty crazy,” Cooper said. “I’ve been to a lot of stadiums and I’ve heard people chant people’s names but to hit a homer as they’re doing it is pretty special.”

The Cubs scored in 6 of their 8 offensive innings, tallying 14 hits and 7 walks. Six different players notched multi-hit games.

“This was a windy, blustery day but the wind was a little different [than Monday night], obviously,” manager Craig Counsell said. “And I think we hit some balls really, really good tonight. Certainly Seiya’s ball, that’s as hard as I’ve seen a baseball hit. That was really impressive.

“We just put good swings on the baseball all night and put pressure on them in a whole bunch of innings.”

Cooper doubled and tripled in addition to his 3-run blast.

“It’s a lethal offense when 1 through 9 is doing it and it’s not just a few guys,” Cooper said. “Everybody put together good at-bats. Even the outs were hard outs. Can’t say enough about the whole job the offense did.

“And the pitching came in and shut the door, too. It was a whole team effort.”

On the mound, Assad was lights-out, tossing 6 shutout innings. He allowed only 4 hits and walked 1 batter while striking out 5 in his first start of the season.

He also got some help from Nick Madrigal at third base with an incredible play:

The tone has certainly changed quickly for the Cubs this season. After Saturday’s lopsided loss in Texas, Craig Counsell’s squad sat 0-2 with a gauntlet schedule coming up in April that includes the Dodgers, Padres, Mariners, Diamondbacks and Astros.

Seventy-two hours later, the Cubs are riding a 3-game win streak and have a chance to head into Thursday’s off-day with a 4-2 record if they can finish off the sweep Wednesday (weather permitting).

Luke Little will get the ball for the Cubs to start Wednesday’s series finale. He pitched the 9th inning Tuesday night, so he will likely be in line for more of an opener type of role as the Cubs aim to utilize rookie Ben Brown in a multi-inning stint out of the bullpen.
