Cubs add to pitching depth with a trio of veterans, including a familiar face

2 weeks agoTony Andracki

The Cubs continue to add pitching depth to their roster, with a trio of veterans signing on minor-league deals.

The team announced an agreement with right-hander Brad Keller Friday.

A source confirmed to Marquee Sports Network that the Cubs are also bringing back former left-handed reliever Brandon Hughes on a minor-league deal. The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney first reported the deal.

Right-hander A.J. Puckett is also joining the organization on a minor-league deal, a source confirmed. Tread Athletics first reported the news.

Puckett is the only one without MLB experience but the other two have seen a variety of action in the big leagues.

Keller, 29, has 166 career games in the majors – including 116 starts. He spent 2018-23 with the Royals before pitching with the White Sox and Red Sox last season.

His best year came as a rookie in 2018 with a 3.08 ERA in 20 starts and 21 relief appearances. He posted 9.0 WAR from 2018-20 but -0.1 WAR since (in 88 games, 59 starts).

Hughes was a great success story for Cubs player development. He was a 16th-round pick in 2017 as an outfielder before transitioning to the mound in 2019. He made his big-league debut in May 2022 – the same day Christopher Morel debuted.

Hughes appeared in 57 games during his rookie season in 2022 with a 3.12 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 68 strikeouts in 57.2 innings. He suffered through a knee injury in 2023 that eventually required surgery.

The southpaw elected free agency in November 2023 and eventually signed with the Diamondbacks. He had an 8.15 ERA in 15 MLB games last season while finding much better success in Triple-A (2.03 ERA in 40 games).

Puckett is a 29-year-old who was a 2nd-round pick with the Royals in 2016. He has bounced around the minor leagues with the Royals, White Sox, Braves and Mariners as well as the Mexican League.

In 49 games between the Mexican League and the Mexican Pacific Winter League, Puckett went 8-3 with a 2.17 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 55 strikeouts in 58 innings.

Throughout his minor-league career, Puckett had a 4.30 ERA as he worked as both a starter and reliever.

All three players will serve as minor-league depth for the Cubs, who have prioritized pitching throughout the offseason.
