Cubs are adding a familiar face to bullpen in trade with Mariners

7 months agoTony Andracki

The Cubs’ beleaguered bullpen is getting some reinforcements.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan broke the news late Monday evening — after the Cubs’ 2-0 loss in Atlanta — that Jed Hoyer’s front office had pulled off a minor trade with the Seattle Mariners. The team confirmed the move Tuesday morning.

Right-handed pitcher Tyson Miller is headed to Chicago in exchange for minor league infielder Jake Slaughter. To make room on the 40-man roster for Miller, left-handed pitcher Richard Lovelady was designated for assignment.

The Mariners designated Miller for assignment last week. He had appeared in 9 games for Seattle this season with a 3.09 ERA and 0.77 WHIP in 11.2 innings while striking out 12 batters against only 1 walk.

Miller, 28, was originally a Cubs draft pick, selected in the 4th round in 2016. He made his MLB debut with the Cubs in August 2020 but only appeared in 2 games for the team before the Rangers selected him off waivers in 2021.

Miller has been all over the league in the last few seasons, spending time with the Brewers, Dodgers, Mets and Mariners in addition to the Cubs and Rangers.

In total, Miller has made 25 appearances (3 starts) in the big leagues with a 2-2 record, 5.91 ERA and 1.34 WHIP.

Slaugher is a 27-year-old infielder who was initially drafted in the 18th round in 2018. He has spent the last year-plus at Triple-A Iowa and is off to a solid start this season.

Slaughter is hitting .297/.392/.487 (.879 OPS) with 5 homers, 10 stolen bases and 17 RBI in 32 games. He plays third base, second base, first base and has even appeared in the outfield.

Lovelady, 28, appeared in 7 games out of the Cubs’ bullpen, posting a 7.94 ERA in 5.2 innings with 2 holds.

Miller will join a Cubs bullpen that has been hit hard with injuries lately. Yency Almonte was placed on the IL Saturday and Adbert Alzolay was just added to the shelf ahead of Monday’s game.
