Cubs bolster catching depth with another trade

12 months agoAndy Martinez

The Cubs made another move amid a busy day on Wednesday.

The team acquired catcher Matt Thaiss from the Angels for a cash consideration. Thaiss had been designated for assignment by the Angels last week. Trey Wingenter was designated for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster. It was the second trade of the day for the Cubs, who earlier acquired right-handed pitcher Eli Morgan from Cleveland for outfield prospect Alfonsin Rosario. The team also designated Patrick Wisdom for assignment.

The former 1st-round pick has a career .655 OPS in 245 major league games across 6 seasons. Thaiss provides catching — and left-handed hitting — depth for the Cubs at the major-league level.

Miguel Amaya was the Cubs’ primary catcher in 2024 and after a swing change in July, turned into a solid offensive option behind the plate for the Cubs. From July 7 on, he slashed .282/.331/.468 with a 124 wRC+, 6 home runs and 32 RBI.

But the Cubs felt the best path forward was to have a two-person tandem behind the plate that would split time with Amaya. That would allow the Panamanian backstop to stay fresh throughout the season and be used in the right matchups.

Thaiss provides just that. The 29-year-old has hit righties better than lefties in his career (.673 OPS, 20 HR, vs. .566 OPS, 2 HR). He had a 4.54 catcher’s ERA in 2024.

Amaya was the lone catcher on the 40-man roster before the trade. The team had parted ways with Christian Bethancourt at the end of the season. Bethancourt hit .281 with 3 home runs, 15 RBI and an .814 OPS in 24 games for the Cubs. But it was arguably the best stretch of his career — he is a career .229 hitter with a .621 lifetime OPS.

Thaiss also has played first base (22 starts) and third base (31 starts) in his career but looks to primarily be a catcher in Chicago.

Wingenter, 30, made 5 appearances for the Cubs, allowing 2 runs in 8 innings with 3 strikeouts.
