Cubs breakout prospect Matt Mervis dishes on his offensive approach, adjustments

1 year agoLance Brozdowski

Matt Mervis’s incredible 2022, highlighted by a 36-homer season that led him to the Cubs minor league player of the year award, drew in accomplishments once again this past weekend.

After a 5th-inning home run in the Arizona Fall League’s (AFL) All-Star game, Mervis took home the game’s Most Valuable Player award, an exclamation point on another league that he has put his mark all over.

In between mashing home runs, Mervis took the time to chat through all the intricacies of his swing on Sloan Park’s home plate during his time in the AFL. He details everything from the principle adjustment that led to his breakout 2022 to his rhythm at the plate, how his hip works and what he thinks about in the box.

After cutting his strikeout rate at every level the Cubs promoted him to this season and destroying the Arizona Fall League, Mervis could be a key piece of the Cubs 2023 roster plans.
