Cubs bullpen shuffling continues as they option young reliever to Iowa
The Cubs continued to shuffle their bullpen on Tuesday.
The team recalled righty reliever Daniel Palencia from Triple-A Iowa and optioned righty Jack Neely to Iowa. The team had recalled Keegan Thompson earlier in the day after placing Julian Merryweather on the IL.
Palencia, 24, has been solid with the I-Cubs since being optioned to Iowa in mid-July. In 10 appearances, he has a 3.65 ERA in 12.1 innings with an eye-popping 23 strikeouts (44.2% strikeout-rate). He’s pitched 7 scoreless outings in that time.
The righty has been flashing his velocity lately with Iowa. In his last outing on Sunday, Palencia threw 5 pitches that touched triple digits, including a 101.5-mph four-seam. That velocity is another, welcome dimension to the Cubs relief corps.
Neely, 24, was called up after the team parted ways with veteran Héctor Neris.
He was brought so he could have a taste of the major leagues, as the Cubs keep an eye beyond 2024.
“Whether it’s Neely or other guys we want to take a look at in different roles, I think that was important to do this time of year,” Hoyer said after the team released Neris.
But Neely struggled in his first major-league taste. In his first outing, he allowed 4 runs in an inning of work. He followed that up with 2 shutout outings but allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in Monday’s 18-8 win over the Pirates.
Now, Palencia will get those opportunities. In 7 games in the majors this season, Palencia has a 6.55 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 11 innings.
