Cubs claim intriguing right-hander off waivers from Brewers

As the season enters its final week, the Cubs remained active on the waiver wire.

On Monday, Jed Hoyer’s front office claimed 28-year-old right-hander Enoli Paredes off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers:

No word yet on a corresponding move, but the Cubs had an available spot on the 40-man roster after the team designated Shawn Armstrong for assignment last week.

Paredes was 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 1 save and 3 holds in 17 games at the big-league level with the Brewers. While those numbers are solid, he did not miss many bats (14 strikeouts) and struggled with his control at times (10 walks) during his 20.2 innings.

He has been dominant in Triple-A this season with a 1.73 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 41 strikeouts against only 11 walks in 26 innings.

Paredes came up through the Astros system, signing with the Houston organization as an amateur free agent in 2015.

He was granted free agency last fall and ended up signing with the Brewers on a minor-league deal.

Paredes began the 2024 season in Triple-A before heading to Milwukee for a little over a month. He went on the IL in early July with forearm tendinitis and wound up missing 2.5 months with the injury.

He was designated for assignment by the Brewers last week when Milwaukee recalled Kevin Herget from the minor leagues.

Paredes is out of options, so he cannot be sent down to the minors without being designated for assignment.

In 37 games with the Astros between 2020-22, Paredes posted a 3.90 ERA and 1.83 WHIP.
