Cubs Convention: Ian Happ amazed at love for Sammy Sosa and his legacy

The 2025 Cubs Convention brought “Slammin” Sammy Sosa back to the Windy City, and his legacy and impact on Chicago and Cubs fans was on full display as he took the stage for the first time in 21 years.

Cubs players, including Ian Happ, were astonished at the amount of love fans gave Sosa as he ran out and gave them a show.

“When you see how much he meant to the fanbase and you see the excitement from everybody…he comes out there, running around the stage, high-fiving everybody, it’s a really cool moment. Happy for the fans, happy for him that they get this experience,” Happ said.

With Sosa’s return to Chicago, Happ looked at the slugger’s numbers across his career and he was taken aback to see how efficient Sosa was at the plate.

“You look at it and you’re like 160 RBIs in one year,” Happ said. “Talking to him [on The Compound], he played everyday. He had 2 years in there where he played 162 [games]. He posted. He was out there. It’s a really impressive career but that stretch especially, it’s another level.”

Sosa’s phrase of ‘good players don’t get nervous’ hit home with Happ, and he realized the level of commitment, dedication and trusting the process of what it takes to be great.

“It’s about putting the work in,” Happ said. “It’s about preparing and you feel like if you’re doing that every day and you’re building that consistency, that should breed success. You do the same thing. You do the same cage work. You believe in that process, you give yourself confidence to go out on the field and perform.”
