2025 Cubs Convention primer: Sammy Sosa, Kyle Tucker and other storylines to watch

1 month agoAndy Martinez

As the Cubs and their fans descend on the Sheraton Grand Chicago for Cubs Convention this weekend, the main attraction will be centered in right — field.

The biggest attraction at this weekend’s annual fan fest will be a legendary right fielder returning to the club where both sides thrived off one another. Arguably the second largest pull will be the presentation of the team’s newest right fielder, one that the team and fans hope can be a shadow of the former.

Sammy Sosa’s return will be the highlight — but Kyle Tucker’s true introduction to Cubs fans will be of interest, too — of the 38th annual Cubs Convention this weekend.

Here are three things to look out for:

Sammy’s return

Sosa’s presence this weekend will probably garner the biggest ovation since the 2017 fest when the team was coming off their historic 2016 World Series title.

The slugger and the Cubs have been estranged since his last season in Chicago in 2004. Last month, Sosa issued a statement where he said he “did whatever I could to recover from injuries in an effort to keep my strength up to perform over 162 games.

“I never broke any laws, but in hindsight, I made mistakes and I apologize.”

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts issued a response and invited Sosa back to Cubs Convention. Two weeks later, Sosa announced he would be in attendance and his presence is highly anticipated by the fanbase.

He’ll likely be introduced to fans on Friday night at the Opening Ceremony, along with other Cubs alumni in attendance. But his ovation will surely be the loudest.

Sosa is scheduled to appear on The Compound Live podcast with Ian Happ on Saturday. Happ has hosted a live edition of his podcast at Cubs Convention in the past and this year he will have Sosa and Tucker on the podcast.

Tucker’s unveiling

After being acquired in a blockbuster trade last month from Houston, Tucker has yet to be in Chicago, so this weekend will be the first time the Cubs’ new right fielder will be in person to Cubs-dom.

His presence in Chicago comes with a bit of an interesting twist — last week he and the Cubs failed to come to terms on a 2025 contract before the arbitration filing deadline. The implications of not reaching a deal are minimal at this point — they can still negotiate a contract up until the arbitration hearing next month.

But the questions to Tucker will surround that negotiation and a potential long-term deal (he’s a free agent after this season).

Hall of Fame

The Cubs have used the Convention as a time to unveil their Hall of Fame class and the anticipation of who enters this year will be exciting for fans.

Last year, Kerry Wood and Aramis Ramírez were announced as the newest members. They were on stage for a video — voiced by their sons — that told them and the crowd in attendance that they were entering the Cubs Hall of Fame.
