Cubs finalize 2024 Opening Day roster
MESA, Ariz. — A day before the team charter heads east for Texas, the final few spots on the plane were confirmed.
Those seats will be taken by players that will give manager Craig Counsell some flexibility in how he chooses to handle his roster.
“I feel like we’re leaving here in a good place,” president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said. “Obviously you’re gonna have some good performances and have some bad performances, some injuries, but generally I think it feels like we’re all ready to go north.
“I think that’s a good feeling.”
Right-hander José Cuas and left-hander Luke Little will occupy the final spots in the bullpen and infielders Miles Mastrobuoni and Nick Madrigal get the final bench spots. Righty Hayden Wesneski and outfielder Alexander Canario were optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Monday.
That means the final roster looks like this:
Rotation:
Justin Steele
Kyle Hendricks
Jordan Wicks
Shota Imanaga
Javier Assad
Bullpen:
Adbert Alzolay
Héctor Neris
Julian Merryweather
Mark Leiter Jr.
Yency Almonte
Drew Smyly
José Cuas
Luke Little
Catchers:
Yan Gomes
Miguel Amaya
Infielders:
Michael Busch
Nico Hoerner
Dansby Swanson
Christopher Morel
Garrett Cooper
Miles Mastrobouni
Nick Madrigal
Outfielders:
Ian Happ
Cody Bellinger
Seiya Suzuki
Mike Tauchman
Injured List:
Jameson Taillon (back)
Patrick Wisdom (back)
The final question marks on the team centered moreso on health than talent. Happ and Madrigal had dealt with hamstring injuries this spring and the decisions came down to the end. Ultimately, though, they were deemed ready to go when the season begins.
“We’re comfortable in his health – that’s 1,” Counsell said. “When we were kind of down to figuring out that decision [it’s] just there’s a role for Nick to play on the team.”
