Cubs’ Ian Happ made history on his 30th birthday
Ian Happ celebrated his 30th birthday in a big way Monday night in Cleveland.
Happ had a home run, reached base 4 times, scored 3 runs and picked up a pair of outfield assists in the Cubs’ 9-8 loss to the Guardians.
It all started with a big 3rd inning.
In the top of the frame, the Cubs left fielder hit a no-doubt, 2-run home run to right field to stake the Cubs to an early lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Austin Hedges picked up the 1st hit of the game for the Guardians, a single to left field. The ball was right down the line, so Hedges tried to stretch it to a double. Happ fired a perfect strike to Nico Hoerner at 2nd to nab Hedges and end the inning.
Happ picked up another outfield assist in the 5th, rifling a throw to 2nd base to get David Fry — who also tried to extend a single — out to end the inning.
