Cubs injury updates: Bellinger, Merryweather, Brown, Wicks, Little

Four days off for the All-Star Break meant the Cubs had plenty of updates to provide on their key injured players.
That included Mike Tauchman, as they activated the outfielder off the injured list ahead of Friday’s game against the Diamondbacks.
Tauchman didn’t start Friday but entered as a pinch-hitter in the 7th inning, grounding out to first base. He then stayed in to finish the game as the Cubs’ center fielder.
It was Tauchman’s first game action since June 17, when he suffered a groin strain.
“He made it back quicker than we were anticipating,” Craig Counsell said. “So we would just have to take that in note but he’s a healthy player, so we’re ready to go.”
Here are the updates on a slew of other players:
Cody Bellinger
Bellinger is eligible to come off the IL on Sunday, but he won’t be available at that time as he recovers from a broken finger on his left hand.
The Cubs are having Bellinger start activities with his hand and will see how he progresses.
“We’ll go quickly if he feels good but we’re gonna go slowly at this point,” Counsell said. “We’re still a ways away here.”

Jordan Wicks
The rookie left-hander was transferred to the 60-day IL on Friday to make room for reliever Jesús Tinoco on the roster.
The move is merely procedural and does not represent a new development for Wicks, who is dealing with an oblique injury.
“He was experiencing symptoms as he tried to ramp up a couple times,” Counsell said. “So we just had to go slower and that has pushed the calendar back.”
Wicks is eligible to come off the IL on Aug. 14. There is no date set yet for when he will head out on a rehab assignment.
Julian Merryweather
The veteran reliever has missed almost the entire season while recovering from a stress fracture in his rib.
But he is very close to a return. Merryweather made his 4th rehab appearance Friday evening for Triple-A Iowa, striking out 2 and allowing 2 hits over 1.2 innings. He threw 20 of his 27 pitches for strikes.
“I think we’re getting close with Julian for sure,” Counsell said. “If all goes well, I would anticipate at the latest him back by the road trip.”
After the Diamondbacks series, the Cubs welcome in the Brewers for a 3-game set next week. They hit the road for Kansas City July 26.
Ben Brown and Luke Little
Ben Brown (neck) was scheduled to throw off a mound in Arizona. He has been out since June 9 with the injury.
Little suffered a left shoulder issue during the Cubs’ series in St. Louis last weekend. The Cubs are getting a second opinion on the injury and will gain a more clear timeline on his recovery after that point.
