Cubs Spring Training Notebook: Kyle Tucker’s debut, righty Colin Rea’s new pitch

MESA, Ariz. — Kyle Tucker was the star player Jed Hoyer and the Cubs chased after and acquired.
Sunday, Cubs fans were able to catch their first glimpse of him in a game.
Tucker made his Cactus League debut on Sunday against the Rangers, manning the DH spot. The 28-year-old went 0-for-3 with a pair of flyouts and a groundout in his three plate appearances as the Cubs beat the Ranger 6-5 at Sloan Park.

Rea’s spring debut
Colin Rea has been tinkering with a slider to implement into his arsenal.
The pitch is meant to have more downward movement and velocity than his sweeper and should play off his fastball. He threw 1.2 innings with 3 strikeouts and 1 run on 2 hits.
Sunday, in his Cactus League debut, he was able to deploy it for the first time against hitters wearing a different uniform.

“Actually, threw quite a bit, especially in the 1st inning and it felt really good,” Rea said after his outing against the Rangers. “Got some swing and misses with it. Got some foul balls and it just felt good coming out of my hand and felt better every time.”
Rea was brought in to bring depth to their rotation but is more than happy to pick up outs in any capacity.
“I think it’s just, what are our goals? What are our ultimate goals? And that’s obviously to win championship and bring a World Series to Chicago,” Rea said. “So, whatever you got to do as a player to contribute to that, no matter what it is, that’s what we’re here for.
“And I think we got a group in the clubhouse that every guy is going to do that and I think those are the type of guys that we brought in.”
New faces
The Cubs announced on Sunday that they had signed outfielder Travis Jankowski to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training. The 33-year-old spent the 2024 campaign with the Rangers and hit .200/.266/.242 with 1 home run, 12 RBI and 11 stolen bases.
