Cubs land No. 17 pick in 2025 MLB Draft
Lightning didn’t strike for the Cubs Tuesday evening.
The MLB Draft Lottery, which is only a couple years old, was held as part of the Winter Meetings and the Cubs entered the day with a 0.7% chance of earning the No. 1 overall pick after going 83-79 in 2024.

They ended up with the 17th pick out of the 18 teams eligible for the lottery.
The Cubs picked 14th in 2024, selecting third baseman Cam Smith who went on to have a stellar first season as a pro. He was promoted to Double-A by the end of the year and hit .313/.396/.609 (1.004 OPS) with 7 homers and 24 RBI in 32 games.
