It was one of a trio of moves after Tuesday’s trade deadline.
The team optioned infielder Miles Mastrobuoni to Triple-A Iowa to make room for Paredes and recalled righty reliever Ethan Roberts from Iowa to fill Mark Leiter Jr.’s spot in the Cubs’ bullpen.
Leiter was traded Tuesday afternoon to the Yankees for minor-league right-handed pitcher Jack Neely and infielder Ben Cowles.
Paredes is hitting 5th in Craig Counsell’s lineup behind DH Cody Bellinger, who is making his first start since suffering a fractured middle finger that landed him on the IL. Bellinger was activated Monday but did not play.
Roberts, 27, has yet to allow a run in 6 innings across 4 games for the Cubs this year. He returned this season from Tommy John surgery that caused him to miss all of 2023.
Mastrobuoni is hitting .200/.255/.233 with 3 RBI and a pair of stolen bases in 98 plate appearances this season.
