Cubs, Mariners set MLB spring training attendance record

3 weeks agoStaff Report

As the Chicago Cubs held off the Seattle Mariners at Sloan Park on Saturday afternoon, the crowds came out in full force for a beautiful day to catch a ball game.

So much so that an MLB record was announced during the game on Marquee Sports Network.

Sloan Park set a new MLB attendance record, topping the most fans at any spring training game in history with 16,161 in the ballpark.

Those in attendance in Mesa, Ariz., cheered and celebrated their way to watch the Cubs’ 9-8 win over the Mariners.

The previous record was set just two years ago, when the Cubs had 16,152 fans at Sloan Park in 2023.

In a game where the Cubs provided power from Pete Crow-Armstrong, Miguel Amaya and Seiya Suzuki, it sure was a beautiful day at the ball park.

Crow-Armstrong had himself a day, going 2-for-3 with a solo homer in the 2nd inning as well as a grand slam to put the Cubs in front in the 3rd inning. Amaya followed suit with a solo home run to go back-to-back with Crow-Armstrong. Suzuki added insurance with a 2-run shot to left field in the 6th inning.

Crow-Armstrong has been on fire this spring with a .522 batting average and a 1.587 OPS in 8 games. After Saturday, he now has 3 homers and 10 RBI in addition to 4 doubles and a pair of stolen bases.

Cubs pitching prospect Cade Horton also recorded his first spring training save, pitching in the 9th inning and giving up a run while recording a strike out.

The Cubs host the San Francisco Giants at Sloan Park on Sunday with first pitch at 3:05 p.m. Chicago time on Marquee Sports Network. Cubs fans will continue to make their way to Sloan Park and pack that stadium before the regular season kicks off in 2025.
