Cubs mourn passing of former pitcher Ken Holtzman

2 weeks agoTony Andracki

Former Cubs southpaw Ken Holtzman passed away recently at the age of 78.

Holtzman spent 15 years pitching in the big leagues, including 9 seasons with the Chicago Cubs from 1965-71 and then again from 1978-79.

He attended UIC and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was drafted by the Cubs in the 4th round in 1965.

Holtzman is most known for his pair of no-hitters — first against the Braves in August 1969 and then against the Reds in June 1971.

In total, Holtzman was 80-81 with a 3.76 ERA in a Cubs uniform, making 209 starts and 28 relief appearances.

He also pitched for the Oakland A’s, Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees, winning 4 World Series in his career — 3 with the A’s (1972-74) and then in 1977 with the Yankees.
