For the first time ever, a Gold Glove Team Award was handed out this fall and the Cubs took home the inaugural honor.

Rawlings made the announcement Friday evening, pitting the Cubs as the best defensive team in the National League. The Indians took home the award in the American League.

The Cubs narrowly edged out the Cardinals to claim the NL accolade, totaling a 21.9 SDI (SABR Defensive Index) rating.

That also marked the highest rating in baseball, as the Indians notched a 17.2 SDI — meaning the Cubs were rated as the best defensive team in the game in 2020.

They were carried by placing 5 players in SABR’s Top 25 overall fielders in the NL — Javy Báez, Anthony Rizzo, Jason Heyward, Nico Hoerner and Willson Contreras.
